Paying for online ads? I have some bad news for you.

Are you pouring money into online ads and wondering why you’re not getting much return on your investment?

That’s because more and more people are discovering how easy it is to block online ad’s and unwanted pop ups, from web browsing and mobile phone applications.

I’m not IT savvy at all, I have no training, but I’ve been blocking online ad’s for over 5 years now. Plus, I’m an idiot so if I can do it, anyone can.

There is no need for me to tell you here how to achieve it because there are plenty of resources online to learn how to block ads. And I highly recommend you do so because if you are not blocking ad’s you are giving the bad guys the opportunity to put malware and other nasties onto your device.

The first line of defence is not allowing ad’s to be served up from unknown sources, so blocking all ad’s is an effective defence against accidental or unintended clicks, or pop ups that can take you to sites that automatically install malware on your phone or your computer. The second line of defence is good virus and firewall software across all your devices. The third line of defence being very careful about what kind of software or apps you install on your devices. And finally, the fourth line of defence is being very careful with files sent to you via email or file sharing services, even from family and friends; you should be suspicious of all files and treat them with caution.

If you are interested in blocking online ad’s, here is a short list to get you started;

  • PiHole
  • DNSBL
  • uBlock Origin
  • Adblock Browser
  • Adblock Plus / Pro

Set up time can be minutes or require multiple hours, some can be simple user side installations with paid subscriptions or require hardware that sits between your computer and the internet.

I have continued to evolve my ad blocking to even block ad’s within mobile phone applications. For example; I don’t see Instagram ad’s in the Instagram App anymore.

But don’t take my word for it. Do your own research and discover a better and safer online experience!

Good luck and safe browsing.
